Sigma helps with Zoo amenities and improvements

milwaukee

The Sigma Group was retained by Milwaukee County to provide site civil engineering services for planning, design and construction of a new west entrance and otter exhibit at the Milwaukee County Zoo. A portion of the Zoo’s overflow parking was lost to the expansion of the WisDOT Zoo Interchange Project. To offset this loss of parking, Milwaukee County developed plans for a new 525-space parking lot on the west side of the Zoo. Improvements to Bluemound Road were made to accommodate full access to the new parking lot.

The project also includes:

  • Entrance with a drop off area
  • Ticketing booths, gates and plaza
  • Retail, restroom and cafe building
  • Otter exhibit and holding building

Sigma was initially retained by the County to provide preliminary engineering to evaluate options for the parking lot/entrance layout, earthwork volumes, utility services and develop preliminary construction cost estimates for project budgeting. Sigma was ultimately retained to complete final design and provide construction administration services for the project.

Phase I

The first phase of the project included the design, permitting and construction of the Bluemound Road improvements, parking lot, associated stormwater collection system and stormwater management facilities.

Sigma was responsible for design survey preparation, geotechnical investigation coordination, development of site civil plans for parking lot including site preparation, erosion control, paving, layout, grading, storm sewer and stormwater management system design and permitting.

Sigma provided services during construction including review of contractor submittals, response to contractor RFIs and issuance of construction bulletins, review of contractor change orders, periodic site inspections, punch list inspection and project closeout inspection.

Phase 2

Phase 2 of the Zoo project includes design, permitting and construction of the west entrance plaza, ticketing booths/gates, retail/restroom/cafe building, and otter exhibit/holding building. Sigma was responsible for preparation of site civil plans including erosion control, paving/layout, grading, and utility plans, design and permitting with the WDNR of a public sanitary sewer extension, and design and permitting of a private water main. This phase is currently under construction. Sigma will continue to provide construction administration services throughout construction of Phase 2.
